This has no right to be as good as it is. I mean, it’s based on a video game, when has anything ever been better than acceptable? But despite that, this is one of the best shows I’ve watched in a long time. I just saw the first episode of the new adaptation of Wheel of Time and, disappointed by it, I was looking for something else and it just so happened to be. to see that this got good reviews. It grew on me quickly and I devoured the entire season in one sitting. Arcane does everything right that so many shows and movies get wrong these days. It respects all of its characters, making sure you understand why they do what they do and makes you sympathize with them. They take the right amount of time to draw you into the story and world before the major plot twists happen so you can really feel their impact. They set things up well in advance and make sure to give you a proper payoff so that nothing feels rushed or cheap. And something that is so rare these days; they are not afraid to give all their characters flaws and allow them to fail, regardless of their gender or how strong they are supposed to be. This is a show with two female leads who can both beat anyone and neither of them feels like they have won. And not once do they feel the need to disparage the men to show how cool they are. Watch out, creators of other shows, this is how you write strong characters, regardless of gender, that your audience can feel invested in. Special mention must go to the animators. Kudos for making characters who can communicate both strong and subtle emotions more clearly than most real actors are capable of. And also kudos for choosing the voice actors and music, both are top notch. Overall, a very enjoyable show that gives me a glimmer of hope for future entertainment, I’m looking forward to season 2.
