Plot
A Montana farming family battles other trespassers on their land. Forrie J. John Dutton (Kevin Costner) often seems to “forget” his Montana accent and revert to the SoCal voice he normally uses.
Costner is an excellent actor as the titular Dutton
Featured in WatchMojo: 10 Best Summer TV Shows Under Your Radar (2018). (Review is for the first two seasons only) I didn’t go into this show expecting to like it, but the plot, acting, and cinematography are all excellent. It’s basically Montana Mob Wars with the occasional massive dose of testosterone (gun-toting cowboys on horses while fishing)!
The show falters early in the second season, but picks up again in the middle
The show is at its best when it shows the chessboard moving between the Duttons and their enemies. Kelsey Asbille is the weakest link as Monica and gives a poor performance, the plot is confusing, and the acting misses the mark. I think Cole Hauser as Rip might be the strongest actor (besides Costner himself) and I was looking forward to every scene Rip was in.
Thomas Rainwater is also great
The plot hums and the scenery is beautiful. Like Cormac McCarthy’s All The Pretty Horses; it was a bit more raw and brutal than the title suggests, this show follows a similar vein. I highly recommend it and wish I hadn’t waited so long to watch it.
